Disney’s D23 event has given us the first official synopsis for their upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Whilst it doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know, the official word is as follows:

“After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER finds Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, DC and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk.

Joining forces with the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon (Anthony Mackie). However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy – the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).”

The Winter Soldier, of course, is Steve Rogers’ best friend, Bucky Barnes. Last seen falling to his apparent death in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, this Bucky is very different to the one that we saw in the first Cap film. Whilst Steve Rogers was frozen for years, came back to life and led The Avengers team, Bucky went down a different path. Similarly frozen in ice, Bucky was found by Russian forces. Having lost an arm and suffering from amnesia, Bucky was turned into a master assassin known as the Winter Soldier. He would then be defrosted in between missions, hence why he doesn’t really age. Just to put it out there, the character is a total badass.

As well as Evans, Stan and Johansson, the sequel will also star Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Toby Jones, Hayley Atwell, Maximiliano Hernandez, Robert Redford, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp and George St-Pierre.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is set for a 4th April, 2014 release.
