Film festivals, film festivals, film festivals.

They’re a big deal because of reasons – something to do with art, probably, and wreaths – and even though Joe Bloggs will never give an ant’s fart about them, all those critic things do so let’s just shut up and listen to them purr.

One of the bigger pomp extravaganzas is the Venice Film Festival and it’s recently been announced that Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY will be opening it on August 28th.

The sci-fi flick stars Sandra Bullock as a medical engineer stranded with George Clooney’s veteran astronaut following a destructive event aboard their spaceship, in what will either prove to be a subtle and deeply affecting treatise on humanity or an illustration of women-kind’s greatest desire.

It will mark the first time a 3D film has kicked off the Festival, which is also a big deal because most film execs are afraid of anything more technologically evolved than the tape recorder.

Opening the Festival could very well spell a happy future for the film itself, allowing it to jump between festivals up to its October 4th release date to run up a good head of steam into the awards’ season.

Cuaron is prolific at Venice – a veteran of two award-winning films there: Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN and CHILDREN OF MEN – so the signs are certainly pointing to the positive for GRAVITY.
