We discussed the rumour a couple of days ago (below), but now it's official - Mandate Pictures have just announced that director Spike Lee will helm the remake. “It’s a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director,” says executive producer Nathan Kahane.

Well thank goodness for that!

Chan-Wook Park's haunting 2003 revenge odyssey OLDBOY is rumoured to gearing up for the remake treatment courtesy of acclaimed director Spike Lee. Then why pray tell are we celebrating this? Because three years ago this project was in the hands of possibly the most ill-suited creative pairing that could ever circle a movie involving live-octopus eating, dentistry by hamm er, self mutilation, and most importantly, that twist...

Step forward Stephen Spielberg and Will Smith!

Told ya.

Don't get us wrong, none of us here at Starburst want an OLDBOY remake (or even another adaptation of the original, equally challenging graphic novel) but as a Spike Lee 'Joint', the film at least won't have to pander to the mainstream audience that a Spielberg/Fresh Prince production would have commanded.

It must be pointed out though that Lee still isn't a lock, so we'll be keeping a close eye on this one just in case Big Willy and Uncle Steve come sniffing around again. In the meantime Mandate Pictures will press on with developing their script by POSEIDON and I AM LEGEND (uh-oh) writer Mark Protosevich. We'll keep you posted.

Now bring me something alive!!!

Is a US, remake of OLDBOY possible without stripping away the controversial elements of the original? If so, who would you like to see tackle the film should Spike drop out? Share your thoughts below!
