With MAN OF STEEL currently flying high at the box office, writer David Goyer has been speaking to HeyUGuys about a possible sequel, not to mention the long-awaited JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.

On the topic of whether MAN OF STEEL is intended to sow the seeds for other Warner Brothers/DC films, Goyer said, “It would be disingenuous to say Warner Bros. doesn’t hope that this would be the starting point for a shared universe. And Zack [Snyder] has said that Bruce Wayne exists in this universe. It would be a different Bruce Wayne from Chris’ [Nolan] Dark Knight trilogy, and it would be disingenuous to say that Zack and I haven’t had various conversations on set, around ‘what if’ and ‘moving forward’. That having been said, it’s all going to depend on the next few weeks. Warner Bros. has hopes that there will be more MAN OF STEEL films, and that this will be the beginning of a shared universe. We could meet Batman or Wonder Woman or the Justice League in these movies. But they all hinge on the box office reception.”

Goyer added, “I think Warner Bros. has seen – and Chris deserves the biggest credit for this – that we were able to revitalise Batman and put it into the first billion dollar superhero film. And they’re hoping that Superman will be revitalised as well. And if we can do Batman and Superman, then maybe we can move on to Wonder Woman, and The Flash, and characters like that.”

Goyer was also asked by CraveOnline whether we can expect to see Lex Luthor turn up in any future Superman outings. The writer responded, “If Lex is going to exist in the world, we would presumably have to give him the same treatment that we gave Lois Lane in the first film, which is make him a credible character. He’s gotta be a man of incredible intelligence, and presumably a man of incredible wealth and incredible resources.”

With Goyer and Snyder looking to start from scratch with their DC universe, I’d say it’s safe to assume that, as well as Christian Bale not returning as Batman, we won’t be seeing Ryan Reynolds return as Green Lantern in any possible JL film.

Of course, any further films will hinge on the box office figures for MAN OF STEEL. Right now, the box office looks like being a non-issue, with MAN OF STEEL on track to have taken $130 million by the end of today.
