Movie News: Dreamscapes, Meltdowns and Blockbusting Prices, SPIELBERG & LUCAS on the Future of Cinema

George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have shared their predictions concerning the future of Hollywood’s big-budget productions and cinemas in general.  "They're [the studios] going for the gold," stated Lucas whilst speaking on a panel at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, "But that isn't going to work forever. And as a result they're getting narrower and narrower in their focus. People are going to get tired of it. They're not going to know how to do anything else."

"There's eventually going to be a big meltdown," Spielberg added. "There's going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen of these mega-budgeted movies go crashing into the ground and that's going to change the paradigm again."

"You're going to end up with fewer theatres, bigger theatres with a lot of nice things,” Lucas envisaged, “Going to the movies will cost 50 bucks or 100 or 150 bucks, like what Broadway costs today, or a football game. It'll be an expensive thing... [The movies] will sit in the theatres for a year, like a Broadway show does. That will be called the 'movie' business."

Video On Demand is, Lucas thinks, the immediate future of entertainment before the next technological development.

"The next step is to be able to control your dreams," he said. "You'll just tap into a different part of your brain. You're just going to put a hat on or plug into the computer and create your own world... We'll be able to do the dream thing 10, 15 years from now. It's not some pie-in-the-sky thing."

That’s all I need! A film produced by my subconscious in which I turn up to work naked, except for a copper Stetson, on the back a three legged flamingo...
