Movie News: Joss Whedon Explains Why He Wants Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver for AVENGERS 2

Movie News

Just the other day a cheeky Bryan Singer announced via Twitter that he’d cast AMERICAN HORROR STORY star Evan Peters as Quicksilver in X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, a move that was seemingly designed to throw a spanner in the works of Joss Whedon’s plan to add him (and his sister the Scarlet Witch) to AVENGERS 2. Well it seems Whedon has taken it in his stride and isn’t going to let the (potentially very confusing) situation stop him from adding the character anyway. Appearing on Jimmy Fallon last night to promote MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, the director explained why he was so eager for the brother and sister team to join the roster:

“Their powers are very visually interesting. One of the problems I had on the first one was, everybody basically had punchy powers. 'I can hit,' 'I can also hit.' Hopefully it didn't get too boring. But coming into the second one, he's got super speed. She can weave spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There’s good stuff that they can do that will help sort of keep it fresh."

Whedon also said that casting is currently underway, though no decisions have been made as yet. But it’s almost a given that the super keen Saoirse Ronan will take the part of the Scarlet Witch. As the studios behind X-MEN and AVENGERS are rivals, we don’t expect to see Evan Peters reprising the role here. Hopefully we'll have more news soon...

..... and just to note, its hard to show super speed onscreen without looking like a Benny Hill sketch.

I stand corrected.... though I still maintain it wouldn't be top of my power wish list if I were subjected to gamma rays/toxic goo. But who knows, perhaps one day I shall be bitten by a radioactive Ussain Bolt and be forced to eat my words ;-)

I have no time for "heroes" who can run fast.... its a RUBBISH power! RUBBISH, I SAY!!!!!!... yeah you heard me, Flash!)

Super speed a rubbish power? are you kidding? I'm not so familiar with Quicksilver's abilities but I know the Flash can run up walls, across water, make himself invisible, vibrate through walls and travel through time and across dimensions. Basically a whole bunch of powers rolled into one

Why can't these movie studio bigwigs just get along for the greater good of the movie watching, comic book reading hordes. All we want is one coherent world to watch our favourite heroes do battle in (though that said, I have no time for "heroes" who can run fast.... its a RUBBISH power! RUBBISH, I SAY!!!!!!... yeah you heard me, Flash!)
