Movie News

Yep, the actor/writer/vodka entrepreneur refuses to give up the ghost on the long-in-gestation sequel, chatting recently about the passion project with talk show host Larry King (who cameoed in the original of course). Talking of the plot, Aykroyd had this new piece of information for us…

"It's based on new research that's being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University. Basically, there's research being done that I can say that the world or the dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width and time, become threatened by some of the research that's being done. Ghostbusters - new Ghostbusters - have to come and solve the problem."

So definitely a passing of the torch movie then. When quizzed on casting, Aykroyd revealed that they need to find actors to play "four new Ghostbusters, four new Columbia students."

And as for the frustrating Bill Murray will-he-won't-he situation, it sadly appears that nothing has progressed…

"There will be a hole for him. If Billy wants to walk in the door and be in the movie, we will find a place."

So Aykroyd and Co continue to jump through hoops for the guy! First he’d only do it if they killed him off – so they wrote him a limited role as Venkman’s ghost; he didn’t like that, so they rewrote it again; then he said he thought that script was balls (paraphrasing) and was out;  then he was in again; out; in; out; in; out. It now looks like he’s out for good. Surely a cameo wouldn’t hurt, just for the fans? For his friends? Not cool, Murray. Not cool.

While there’s always a danger revisting a beloved franchise so late on can run the risk of tarnishing the originals, I for one am rooting for Aykroyd to get this off the ground. It seems they’ve spent an insane of amount of time getting the script right after all, which is uncommon for a picture of this type, so hopefully this long development time can pay off. Another reason to hope that this film gets the greenlight - the studio WILL reboot it when Aykroyd gives up.

If Aykroyd’s right and this goes cameras later this year, a 2014 release would actually coincide with the original movie’s thirtieth anniversary (good god), which is actually quite fortuitous!
