TV News: Bad Robot Adapting Stephen King's 11/22/63

Movie News

The number of Stephen King adaptations currently heading our way is staggering, with new versions of CARRIE, PET SEMETARY, IT and CUJO in various stages of development, alongside material making its screen debut such as UNDER THE DOME, THE BREATHING METHOD, THE TEN O'CLOCK PEOPLE and CELL. (There’s also THE OVERLOOK HOTEL, Warner Bros' recently announced prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING, but King would probably be grateful if we didn’t mention that.) Joining that impressive list today is 11/22/63, the author’s most recent book (his own upcoming SHINING ‘sequel’ DR. SLEEP aside) that tells the tale of an English teacher attempting to stop the assassination of John F. Kennedy after traveling back in time to 1958.

Since King has had his fair share of disappointment in the past with more bad adaptions than good, it’s encouraging that so many of the list above are in the hands of major talent, and 11/22/63 is no exception, with J.J. Abrams’ production outfit Bad Robot snagging the TV rights. Even better, they’re looking at this to be their cable debut, allowing them freedom no network could give in terms of mature storytelling.

We’ll have more news as it develops…
