Uh-oh… this one’s not going to go down very well with a lot of you. John Hughes' 1985 comedy classic WEIRD SCIENCE is getting the remake treatment from Universal Studios and Joel Silver (who’s also behind that recently announced ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK trilogy). The film will reportedly be re-made as "an edgy, R-rated comedy in the style of THE HANGOVER" (shudder) by screenwriter Michael Bacall, who recently brought the ‘80s property 21 JUMP STREET to the big-screen. To his credit, Bacall did a good job in leaving the original canon intact whilst still contemporizing the concept, and since the sequel was just announced earlier this week, it clearly made them a bunce. Silver and co would be best advised to dodge the fan backlash by following that same tactic and asking original stars Anthony Michael Hall & Ilan Mitchell-Smith (above) to come back as the lead characters’ fathers - at least the protagonists would then have a legitimate reason for attempting something so ludicrous; "Hey did you hear what our dads did one time? They made their own Kelly LeBrock!!!" "No way! How'd they do that?!" "With science. Weird science!" Cue the new Jay-Z cover version of Oingo-Boingo's theme tune.

The larger problem facing the producers though: WEIRD SCIENCE's goofy, and let’s face it, slightly skeezy premise belongs firmly in the ‘80s. Will today’s more savvy audiences accept a movie about two nerds who make a hot woman using a computer, playboy clippings and a Barbie doll attached to a battery? They’re on dangerous ground here.

We'll have more news as it develops...
