Evil Dead pandemonium is reaching a fever pitch, but while talking up Fede Alvarez' new gore filled, splattertastic remake, details recently emerged with regard to the future of the original Bruce Campbell starring trilogy and specifically, the possibility of another Army of Darkness film.

As previously reported, a few weeks ago while doing press for Oz The Great and Powerful, Raimi let slip his plans for Evil Dead 4. Later, Rob Tapert, one of the executive producers on all of the Evil Dead films, including this new incarnation, spoke to ComingSoon and told them: "That would be 'Army of Darkness 2," adding "Everybody calls it 'Evil Dead 4' but 'Army of Darkness' wasn't called 'Evil Dead' anywhere except by the fans."

Dampening the fire a little, Campbell also weighed in, saying:

"Sam threatens this every six months," he told us during the same interview. "I've heard this a thousand times, because in the back of his mind, he never wants to let go, because he loved making these movies. We all loved making them together. They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he's not going to let that go, and I'm never going to say 'no.' It'll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that's what he does and who knows? It may happen."

So, where does this all stand now? Well, we had the chance to talk with Bruce Campbell this morning for an exclusive interview that will appear in our next issue (in stores from April 19th), and while nothing new came out in terms of will they or won't they make another Army of Darkness film, Campbell did let us know if he'd ever be okay with relinquishing the role of Ash, should someone suggest a reboot of Army of Darkness:

“No, I hope there is never anyone else who plays that character.”

With Fede Alvarez already writing a possible sequel for the Evil Dead remake, we also asked Campbell if this budding franchise might ever get it's own Army of Darkness film, to which he replied after pointing out that the original trilogy was "never meant to be":

“I don't know where these would go if someone like Fede actually sat down and planned them all, who knows? I don't really know. But I think we're all in agreement - Sam and Fede - that, the second one - if Fede does another one - it'll have to be a... it'll be a big surprise. It's not gonna take you where you think you want to go.”

So, not a slam dunk that we will once more see Ash and his big bad boomstick, but at least we know that as far as Bruce Campbell is concerned, there is only one true Ash Williams and that ain't bad.

EVIL DEAD is released in cinemas nationwide on April 18th and is reviewed here.
