Movie News: Sam Mendes To Return For BOND 24?

Movie News

Although this is still in the rumour stage, there is a positive indication that Sam Mendes may be returning to helm the next Bond film. According to Baz Bamigboye (whose reports on SKYFALL were very reliable) Mendes is now 75% of the way towards accepting the job.

With Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson deciding not to go with screenwriter John Logan’s idea of Bond 24 and 25 being linked films, Mendes is now reportedly interested in helming, as 24 will now be a standalone film rather than half of two that would be shot back to back. You can certainly see why EON would be keen to keep some of that SKYFALL magic alive (highest grossing Bond film and all that) and Mendes was a key part of that.

It also harks back to the older days of Bond, where a director would make several Bonds in a row. Since Bond returned with GOLDENEYE, each film has had a different director (with Martin Campbell returning after a 3 film gap for CASINO ROYALE), so Mendes would be the first director since John Glen to return to directing straight after his last outing.

Bond films generally have a quick production turn around (barring studio setbacks) so production will likely begin later this year or early next, with a view to a 2014 release date. Whether Mendes stage work on CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (which is due to open in May) and his desire to direct KING LEAR in January will affect this or his signing on remains to be seen, but if EON want him to direct, they will probably move things around to accommodate his schedule.

If Mendes does return, I suggest his first order of business should be to put the gun barrel back at the beginning of the film.

SKYFALL is out on DVD and Blu-Ray now. BOND 24 will probably hit cinemas in late 2014/2015
