So there’s a lot of fan concern at the moment that with J.J. Abrams choosing to sign up for EPISODE VII, it means he’s likely going to have to leave the directorial reigns of the STAR TREK franchise to somebody else. Even his TREK cast are a little worried, with Chris Pine recently stating that while he thinks his boss is a good fit, if he doesn’t come back to helm a third then he’ll “have to kidnap him and hold him hostage” until he agrees to. Okay sure, he was joking, but it just goes to show that it’s not just us lot who have reservations he’ll be able successfully straddle both brands.

Pffft, J.J. says. Nonsense.

And so, another day brings talk of yet another major property to the table of J.J. and his production outfit Bad Robot. Speaking onstage at the 2013 DICE summit with Gabe Newell of Valve Software recently, the filmmaker revealed the duo are working together on developing a movie based on either PORTAL or HALF-LIFE.

These games, for those amongst us who are unfamiliar, are two of Valve's biggest properties – and both fall directly into the category of sci-fi to boot. PORTAL sees you trapped in the abandoned research facility of Aperture Science in a mission to defeat a maniacal AI called GLaDOS, while HALF-LIFE pits you against an alien invasion. Both have rich mythologies, and take place in the same universe - plenty of material to mine for a movie franchise or two.

Sure, it’s early days yet, but the fear as a STAR WARS fan that J.J. might not be able to give EPISODE VII one hundred percent of his concentration is making us a little nervous. Personally, I’ll worry about STAR TREK later.
