Movie News: Ho Ho NO!... Depp Back As Jack?

Written by Paul Mount Friday, 24 August 2012

Movie News

It’s the news we’ve all been waiting for/dreading (delete as applicable). We’re pretty much all in agreement here at Starburst that last year’s fourth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga - that’d be On Stranger Tides in case you’ve been trying to forget all about it (and who could blame you?) - was an absolute shipwreck of a movie, the biggest disaster at sea since the sinking of the Titanic. But what do we know? You crazy kids rolled out to see it anyway and it nabbed a scarifying gazillions of dollars at the Box office (well, comfortably over $1 billion, at any rate). Not hugely surprising to hear unconfirmed reports that the suits at Disney are rather keen on getting a fifth Pirates romp out there as soon as - and it’s rumoured that Captain Jack (Sparrow) will be back if Johnny Depp can be tempted to accept the equally-rumoured $90 million pay check Disney are waving in his face like a green backed carrot. Nice work if you can get it.

Depp is said to be content to return to the iconic role as he’s keen to ‘pick and choose’ his other films and a hefty wedge for a new Pirates is likely to enable him to be more selective when considering other projects. Whilst we don’t necessarily condone the idea of a fifth Pirates movie we’re happy to see Depp do whatever’s necessary to avoid another stinker like Dark Shadows
