The latest in the sad saga of remaking and rebooting films that are less than twenty years old enters its newest phase. It’s been 17 years since JUMANJI wowed kids with its mediocre CGI and extra hairy Robin Williams. The spiritual sequel ZATHURA failed to find an audience the same way ten years later.
Now head of Columbia Pictures Doug Belgrad has confirmed that the studio is working on a new version of JUMANJI as well as potential sequels with a view to a franchise.
No writer or director has been announced or attached yet but to soften the blow its more than likely that by the time we see this the original will be over twenty years old. The first film is fun but flawed and has dated badly due to the still relatively primitive CG creatures that didn’t look great even then, so there is room for improvement.
