Curse of Chucky

Serial killer Charles "Chucky" Lee Ray is back, and he’s bringing his original creator Don Mancini with him!

CURSE OF CHUCKY has seemingly won out over Mancini’s long mooted reboot, which would have returned the character to his more sinister roots after the increasingly lampoonish approach of BRIDE and SEED OF CHUCKY slowly robbed the series of any real horror. CURSE, though the sixth in the series, is thought to be more in tone with CHILD'S PLAY 1, 2 and 3.

The story concerns Chucky being mailed to a family moaning the loss of a family member in the wake of a funeral. As if the main character, a wheelchair-bound young woman called Nina, doesn’t have enough on her plate surrounded by bickering relatives, now she must contend with the titular ginger psychopath running amok.

Brad Dourif will reprise the voice of Chucky, while Mancini, who wrote the character's first outing CHILD'S PLAY in 1988, will write, direct and produce the film for Universal, which will skip a cinema release and go straight to home video. A few years ago this would be a huge red flag, but with an increasing number of high quality movies (especially horror) debuting on DVD/Blu-ray these days due to the unrealistic costs attributed to theatrical releasing, this doesn’t mean that it can’t be ace. Personally, the more movies that adopt this model the better. Have you tried to watch a 15-certificate horror movie on a Saturday night at your local multiplex? Now that’s true horror.
