Movie News: Nicholas Winding Refn in Talks For 2000AD Strip BUTTON MAN

Button Man

Last year Nicholas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling teamed up to bring us the superb DRIVE which literally became a massive cult film within two weeks of release. The duo have ONLY GOD FORGIVES, a thriller set in Thailand due out early 2013 as well as a LOGAN'S RUN remake up their sleeve. Now Refn is in talks to adapt a 2000AD comic strip for DreamWorks.

BUTTON MAN follows the exploits of Harry Exton an ex-mercenary who is pitted against other violent men in an underground sport. Each man is given a “Voice” who they work for whose identity they do not know. The object of the game is to take the first two joints off a finger off the other contestants as a prize. Those who lose three fingers end up being shot. The ‘Voices’ behind the contestants gamble in the back ground making lots of money on those who are good at the game like Exton and when Exton decides to quit he finds that leaving the game isn’t so easy.

I’m hoping this will be another slick urban thriller like DRIVE rather than another violent future sport film like DEATH RACE or GAMER. I could do without one of those, but Refn has rarely done anything conventional so there is no reason to believe this won’t be another strange, stylish thriller from one of the most interesting directors working today.
