[Scroll down for update...]

Aside from announcing the director was to be Kimberley Pierce (of harrowing gender-swap drama BOYS DON'T CRY) early this year, there's been little in the way of movement on the CARRIE remake since it was first revealed to be in production last May. Rather than seeing sense and binning the project, it seems MGM have been quietly beavering away on the fourth stab at bringing Stephen King's 1974 novel to new movie-going audiences, and are closing in on their choice of Carrie White. The first two names bandied about last year were, as previously reported, TRUE GRIT's Haillee Steinfeld and the much-maligned, but really rather good when given the opportunity (despite being a bit of a knob according to certain directors) Megan Fox. Don't panic, looks like MGM saw sense on that one.

So news comes now that the exhaustive casting process, which saw Emily Browning (SUCKER PUNCH), Dakota Fanning (WAR OF THE WORLDS) and Lilly Collins (MIRROR MIRROR) all reading, have yielded two new frontrunners...

Chloe Moretz

Haley Bennett

A far cry for the idiotic decision to even consider Fox as Carrie White, these two actresses are both excellent choices and go to some length to assure that MGM are actually taking the project seriously. Chloe Moretz is obviously a no-brainer - the 15 year old is precisely the right age and has yet to turn in a performance less than stellar. The lesser known Haley Bennett also continues to impress, her standout genre role so far being THE HOLE, Joe Dante's criminally underrated family-friendly horror flick.

Meanwhile, in the role of the Margaret White, Carrie's abusive mother, MGM are reportedly looking at Award winning actresses Jodie Foster and Julianne Moore.

With an early mission statement to stick closer to King's source material rather than De Palma's, and the casting now leaning more towards acting ability rather than marketing potential, this film might be one to watch out for after all.

Deadline are reporting that MGM have made their decision and officially offered the role to... drum roll... KICK-ASS actress Chloe Moretz! Can't fault their choice at all.

Will Miss Moretz sign? We hope so. More on this as it develops...

Well that didn't take long! Moretz has confirmed via her Twitter feed that she's accepted the part:

@ChloeGMoretz: "Never been so happy in my life! Thank you Kim Pierce and thank u MGM for the chance of a lifetime i will never forget"

Excellent news.

CARRIE is scheduled for a 2013 release.
