Movie News

Last autumn, Universal Pictures put the kibosh on Ron Howard’s proposed film and television adaptation of Stephen King’s epic seven volume series THE DARK TOWER citing budget reasons. Producer Brian Grazer said that they were trying to bring the budget down for this ambitious project but its future was cloudy at best. Now word is that Ron Howard is close to a deal with rival studio Warner Bros.

Warner has apparently bought Akiva Goldsman’s script for the first movie and is keen for him to do a polish on it before the green light is given. The plan is for Howard to direct the film early in 2013. It’s not clear whether Javier Bardem will still star as ‘The Gunslinger’ Roland Deschain.

There is no confirmation yet that the saga will still be told across a television series as well but the fact that Time Warner also own HBO is encouraging. That way if they do pursue the TV angle at least we can be confident it will be done right.

I haven’t read the books but I’m familiar with the Marvel Comic version and I enjoyed it very much. Whilst this is still a risky project it's clear there is a major desire on the part of Howard to get this done.

Now we're about due some news on where the AKIRA project is at aren’t we?
