Beloved teen idol, singer, songwriter and actor, Davy Jones of the group The Monkees died today due to heart failure. He was 66.

Mr. Jones was born on December 30, 1945. His original ambition was to be a jockey until be auditioned for the stage role of Peter Pan. Upon recognition of his work, he landed subsequent parts on Coronation Street and the Pickwick Papers before playing the Artful Dodger in the musical stage production of Oliver!.

Discovered by Ward Sylvester, he was brought to Los Angeles and won the lead in the famous television series, The Monkees. 58 episodes were produced along with the surreal feature film spin-off Head, 9 albums and a TV special.

The Monkees and their zany antics became a worldwide musical phenomena that included merchandising ranging from bubble gum cards, lunch pails, comic books and coloring books.

Mr. Jones retired for a brief time, but toured again with the group during the years 1986-1989 and 1996-1997.

An abysmal remake show was created in the late 90's, but lacked the chemistry the original four actors had together.

In later years, Mr. Jones performed in several stage plays and finally achieved his lifelong ambition to become a jockey racing briefly with honorable results.

We will miss you, Mr. Jones. You were charming, funny and talented, a true gentleman and class act. You always made time for your fans whether it was an autograph or photo taken with you.

Thank you for being a part of all our lives.

This is really shocking as The Monkess were one of the great pop groups of my formative years - I saw them live last year and Davy was on great form, really energetic. Really sad news.
