Movie News

I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. Talented low budget horror director Jim Mickle; who was responsible for last year’s superior vampire film STAKELAND as well as the underseen debut film MULBERRY STREET, has signed on for his first horror remake.

Mickle will direct a remake of Jorge Michel Grau’s Mexican cannibal film WE ARE WHAT WE ARE. He is set to write the adaptation with his regular collaborator and lead actor Nick Damici.

For this version the poverty stricken cannibal tale will be transposed from Mexico City to a poor section of the Catskills region of New York State. Belladonna productions who produced Mickle’s first two films are financing the film which is currently being written.

The original WE ARE WHAT WE ARE, tells the tale of a dirt poor family who has been living off human meat for some time and who start to unravel when their patriarch dies unexpectedly. It’s a really well executed film, equal parts social drama and icky horror. It might be just me but there is something uniquely Mexican about the original and it feels kind of like Hollywood trying to do a remake of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON or something. Still the material is not outside of Mickle’s comfort zone as anyone who has seen MULBERRY STREET will know.  It may be a remake, but at least it’s a remake with actual talent attached rather than the latest hot shot commercial director.
