Movie News

We’ve heard all about Universal’s plans for their shared monster movie-verse that stars this week with The Mummy, but now comes news on some new additions to the realm known as the Dark Universe.

To give some background, as well as the Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella-headlined The Mummy (which will also introduce Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll), Johnny Depp is signed on the star in The Invisible Man, Javier Bardem is to play Frankenstein’s monster, and then Dwayne Johnson, Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson are rumoured for The Wolfman, Bride of Frankenstein and Creature From the Black Lagoon, respectively.

Alex Kurtzman is the man tasked with putting this shared world together, and he’s now revealed plans to revisit some other classic creatures of yesteryear. Speaking to Fandom, Kurtzman has confirmed that news takes on Dracula, The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are being planned. At one point in time, it was speculated that the Luke Evans-starring Dracula Untold may be a part of this shared realm, but that has since been played down.

Going one further, Kurtzman then discussed some talents he’d like to get involved in Universal’s Dark Universe, enthusing, “There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off. I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting. I’d love to bring Michael Fassbender in, I’d love to bring Jennifer Lawrence in, I’d love to see Charlize Theron in there, Angelina Jolie…”

As ever, expect more on the Dark Universe as it continues to develop. In the meantime, The Mummy is in UK cinemas from this Friday.
