Three Names Shortlisted to Direct THE FLASH

Where Warner Brothers’ DCEU goes, one of its biggest ongoing problems (of which there seemingly are many) is finding a director for The Flash. With Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa both having left the project over creative differences, the film is currently once again back on the hunt for someone to fill its director’s chair. And now, it appears that The WB has put together a new shortlist of potential candidates.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Warners is making it a priority to find a helmer for The Flash sooner rather than later, and their latest shortlist of names for the gig includes Robert Zemeckis, Sam Raimi, and Matthew Vaughn.

Zemeckis has been linked to the job before, with him best known to genre fans for the likes of the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and for nabbing an Oscar for Forrest Gump. As for Raimi and Vaughn, they’re both new names in the Flash frame and both new names that will surely get fans excited. Raimi, of course, wowed us all with his Evil Dead movies before later turning out the Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man trilogy – a trio of movies whose first two were hugely influential in the current superhero movie boom that we’re experiencing. Where Vaughn is concerned, he’s another name who’s a huge favourite of plenty of genre fans thanks to the likes of Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service (and this year’s follow-up).

It’s believed that Zemeckis is the current favourite to end up directing The Flash, although this is far from definite due to a potential scheduling conflict he would have with a Steve Carrell-headlined to-be-titled war movie that he has lined up.

The last major news on The Flash was that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’s Joby Harold was brought in to completely start from scratch with the story and screenplay earlier this year. Already on board for the film are Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash, Kiersey Clemons as love interest Iris West, and Billy Crudup as Barry’s father, Henry. It’s also believed that Ray Fisher’s Cyborg will have some sort of role in the film, too.

The Flash has been the most problematic of all of Warner Brothers’ DC movies, with Grahame-Smith leaving the project in early 2016, only for replacement Famuyiwa to then follow suit. Added to that, the film keeps getting shunted from potential release date to potential release date – it currently doesn’t have an official release date at this stage – and there’s even talk that Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup may walk from the film due to the constant delays. As for Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster, he’ll have a huge part to play when Zack Snyder’s Justice League arrives in cinemas this November.

Expect more on all of this as we get it.
