Well, well, well. The next entry in the main X-Men movie franchise has now been given a title and an official release date.

From this day forward, the next X-Men picture will be known as X-Men: Dark Phoenix. As per 20th Century Fox, that film will hit the big screen on November 2nd, 2018.

Previously, it was believed that this next movie would be titled X-Men: Supernova. Apparently not. One thing that was correct, though, were those earlier reports that the film would focus on Jean Grey and the famed Phoenix Saga comic book arc. Given the confirmed title for this new movie, it looks as if Sophie Turner’s Jean will indeed be the focal point of the film.

Of course, the whole Phoenix element was previously seen in X-Men: The Last Stand, with Famke Janssen’s Jean being taken over by the all-powerful Phoenix Force. In X-Men: Apocalypse, we saw a glimpse of Turner’s young Jean battling her own demons.

Whilst The Last Stand did indeed feature the Dark Phoenix as a plot point, it was largely used as a side dish to the film’s greater story. In this next movie, it’s believed that the Phoenix will be the main focus of the film. Given how the Phoenix is seen as one of the most powerful characters in the entire Marvel comic book world – having actually defeated the world-eating Galactus at one point – it’s about time the character is given the full spotlight.

In the comic book realm, the Phoenix is a cosmic force from deepest space. With previous speculation claiming that this next X-Men movie could well head to the stars, pulling inspiration from The Phoenix Saga seems like a sensible move.

In terms of other details on X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the only other real information known at this stage is that longtime X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg looks likely to write and direct the film, and Sophie Turner has previously said how the film is expected to start shooting before the year is out.

Elsewhere, Fox has also confirmed a solid release date for Josh Boone’s New Mutants, with that young spinoff effort booked in for April 13th, 2018. This, of course, comes hot on the heels of Deadpool 2 being confirmed for a June 1st, 2018 release.
