Movie News

Following yesterday’s rather awesome new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, we now have a little bit more information on Michael Keaton’s villain of the piece, and in turn that has given some new details on the movie itself.

Yes, as the title of this post suggests, Homecoming will actually introduce Damage Control to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For those not familiar with the comic book group, Damage Control are basically a construction company that go around cleaning up the mess and destruction caused by the heroes and villains of the Marvel world. Previously, ABC was developing a series based on the company, although all has gone a little quiet on that front lately.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tony Stark will actually introduce his own organisation known as the Department of Damage Control. How does that tie in with Keaton’s Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture? Well, Toomes himself is the owner of a company that specialises in cleaning up after huge events such as Avengers Assemble’s Battle of New York. When Stark brings his own clean-up crew in, that causes problems for Toomes’ livelihood.

Director Jon Watts spoke to Fandango about Damage Control, and when asked about whether that opens up possibilities for the crew to get involved in the greater MCU as a whole, he said, “Yeah, possibly. For me, I’m thinking about this movie, it just fit in with our overall philosophy with the kind of story we wanted to tell. In the same way that Peter gives us the ground-level view of what it’s like to be a 15-year-old kid in a New York City that was almost destroyed by aliens before the Avengers showed up. You also wonder after all these huge messes are made, who’s sent in to clean up? Is it the normal people who would be hired to do something like that? Does it become a government operation? Is it dangerous? What do you do with all the alien body parts that you find? I really like asking those practical questions about this world and then using that to drive the story.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings to the big screen on July 7th, and, if you’ve not seen it yet, be sure to check out the fantastic new trailer below:
