Woody Harrelson Gives New Details on His HAN SOLO Role

We’ve known for a little while now that Woody Harrelson’s role in Disney’s still-be-titled young Han Solo movie was that of a mentor of sorts to Alden Ehrenreich’s Han, but now fan-favourite Woody has been giving us just a smidge more detail on his character.

Speaking briefly about the subject on Jimmy Fallon, Harrelson explained, “I play a guy named Beckett who’s kind of a criminal and mentor to Han. That’s all I can say. I’ll be there until the end of July.”

In terms of established canon (or material that was previously canon), there’s no character by the name of Beckett, although there was a Corellian smuggler named Bek Nataal in a 1995 short story. Then there’s Garris Shrike, a criminal and mentor of Han’s who first appeared in 1997’s The Paradise Snare. While Harrison seemingly isn’t directly playing either of these characters, it sounds that his Beckett may well pull inspiration from the pair, particularly Shrike.

As well as Ehrenreich and Harrison on board, also signed on for the Han movie are Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, and then unknown roles for Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Michael K. Williams, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

To be directed by The LEGO Movie’s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the currently-untitled Han Solo picture – itself the second Star Wars Story effort following Rogue One – is set for a May 25th, 2018 release.
