While Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot certainly divided opinion, it seems that the poor box office performance of that movie isn’t enough to kill off the GB franchise just yet.

Speaking to io9 about the recently launched Ghostbusters: Now Hiring VR game, Ivan Reitman was asked what lies ahead for the main franchise. Reitman, of course, is the man who directed the original two Ghostbusters movies and served as a producer on last year’s female-driven redo.

Previously, we’ve known that an animated movie was being planned, but the future of the live-action pictures seemed a tad up in the air. Apparently not, though, for Reitman said, “We jumped into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action films. I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that.”

Giving his thoughts on where things went wrong for the Ghostbusters reboot, Reitman explained, “We certainly would’ve loved to have a larger hit. But considering the last film was almost 30 years ago, it really did extremely well. I think the film cost too much, frankly, and that’s the real issue. I personally had other points of view in terms of where the film should go and it was kind of a continuous conversation with Paul [Feig] about that. But Paul was the filmmaker on this one and he’s a very talented director. I wanted to give him enough room to do the film he thought it should be.”

So, it seems that there’s still life left in the main Ghostbusters franchise for now, it just remains to be seen when the next live-action big screen outing will be. As for the animated effort, early word is that we may see that film as soon as 2019.

As ever, expect to hear more on any developments as and when they happen.
