UPDATED WITH CONFIRMATION FROM SONY!

Guess we can put this story to bed. Our ace tech-guy Jim - so frustrated was he at the is-it-real-is-it-not controversy - emailed Sony themselves for confirmation. And they took time out from their war on cyber-terrorists to throw us a quick reply:

"Not only is the poster you reference a fake, the creative quality is so poor it is hard to understand why anyone would believe it is real."

Sorted. Cheers, guys! Sorry to ever doubt you.

We feel a bit bad now.

Here's our previous story. Probably not worth reading now to be honest. Or is it? No. But the comments section contains some fun stuff!

23/05/11

Exciting news! Sony today unveiled their teaser poster for one of 2012's most eagerly-awaited superhero flicks THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Ok, brace yourselves web-heads, here's the moment you've all been waiting for...

TA-DAAAAA!

Oh.

Seriously, Sony? That's the best you can do?! Maybe all divisions were too busy getting the PSN back online they had to get Billy Intern to knock it up in photoshop on his lunchbreak.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is directed by 500 DAYS OF SUMMER director Marc Webb (who I'm convinced only landed the gig based on his pun-tastic name, the same way Ang Lee was hired to direct HULK*.) The impressive cast includes British actor Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Ben & May Parker, and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard.

*You wouldn't like me when I'm Ang Lee. Geddit? C'mon, they must have been considering all the headline opportunities.

Worst poster EVER?! How do feel about them starting over after three immensely popular movies? Let us know with your comments below!

I think my judgement was clouded by the fact I subconsciously want this film to fail. I was looking forward to the Vulture...

I waited decades to see a live action Spidey/Doc Ock face off - but now you've really got me thinking. Vulture? Bald, old and green like he SHOULD be? Classic Ditko/Romita era inspired storyline? I'd pay to see that in 3D.

There's minimalist...and there's THIS. 2 things kind of gave the game away - "IN July 3" and since when does 2D only go to selected theaters. Nice try though.

pretty surprised by that, it's not a very exciting poster but i have definitely seen worse

Agreed, I thought it was a fair attempt at a teaser poster, it does fit in with the mood of the films somewhat.
Fake as my driving license I'm afraid.

wait, so it is a fake?

I already know that Peter falls for the girl next door. At least give me a little time to pretend I dont remember how it is going to play out.

totally agree with this, i don't know how many superhero origin stories i can take. everyone already knows how spiderman gets spidey powers, can we not just have some stories about him actually doing something with them?

I think its crap-tastic that they are redoing this. I loved the first few and I dont really want a poor man's spiderman as the originals replacement. A painful and unnecessary attempt at remaking an already established series of movies. It's too soon, and guess what...I already know that Peter falls for the girl next door. At least give me a little time to pretend I dont remember how it is going to play out.

And people the poster looks like a teen was mid putting it together for a school project, and fell asleep mid-task. And thats our teaser. Really? One of the most iconic Spiderman things like his "web shooters" and you couldn't even attempt a little effort. Wow!

If the movie is as lazy and half assed as the poster, I think ya have a problem newbies! Despite having a great Aunt may and Ben, I need a little more from my Spiderman then "youth". He might last a few years, but dont know if these movies will last 5 seconds when ripped to shreds by critics.

THIS JUST IN:
In an exclusive to Starburst Magazine, Sony Pictures have been in touch and said:

Nice of them to drop us a line.
So there we go, let the internet chatterers know - mystery solved!

Call me cynical, but I think I might see what is happening here. The 'Kelonder Woman' effect is taking hold. I have altered the poster to more accurately reflect the situation...

It's a fake according to a number of other websites that are reporting on this poster.

Well, people on various sites are claiming various things about Sony Pictures or Marvel Studios involvement, ranging from neither being involved all the way through to both being involved to 'OMG FAKE' tp 'My uncle owns Marvel and it's real' - In short, ahhhhhh, internet!
