Is Ares the Villain of Patty Jenkins' WONDER WOMAN?

French magazine Les Toiles Héroïques has recently run a feature on Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, and it appears that we now know the villain of the movie.

Translated from the magazine is the reveal that it will be Ares, the God of War, who will be battling Gal Gadot’s Amazon in June. The actual translation reads “Before these scientific formulas, there is a deadly gas that could well annihilate humanity. It turns out that it might interest Ares, the God of War. He is jealous of humanity, which is a creation of his father, the deceased Zeus.”

On those “scientific formulas”, Chris Pine told the outlet, “I play a pilot who works for the Allies and spies on the Germans without their knowledge. My character steals a notebook filled with scientific formulas in an Ottoman base, he steals a plan but is show down in the open sea.”

Of course, this news on Ares as the villain of the piece is still to be confirmed by Warner Brothers or anyone directly involved with the picture, but when it comes to Wonder Woman villains he’s certainly a logical choice to bring to the big screen. Immortal and with a whole host of superhuman powers including teleportation and necromancy, Ares draws strength at times of conflict and war.

The current synopsis for Wonder Woman reads:

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, the princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shoes and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers… and her true destiny.

As well as Gal Gadot as Diana and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, the film will also feature Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, and then unknown roles for the likes of David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner and Danny Huston. Huston is seen in a seemingly villainous role in recent trailers for the movie, so it may be that he's either tied to Ares or is playing a take on the rogue. That's merely speculation though.

Wonder Woman is released on June 2nd.
