Lucasfilm Exploring Future Options for Leia

While it’s still struggling to sink in that Carrie Fisher is no longer with us, when it comes down to the harsh reality of it, Hollywood simply doesn’t stop for anybody. And so, the future of Leia Organa is something that needs to be addressed by Disney and Lucasfilm.

On that topic, The Hollywood Reporter has word that a meeting is scheduled for next week as Leia’s Episode IX involvement is decided upon. Director Colin Trevorrow will be meeting with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy to discuss the options available.

In the aftermath of Fisher’s passing, it was revealed that the actress had finished shooting her scenes for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, but Leia Organa was also scheduled to have an extensive role in Episode IX. The current word from THR says that Leia was due to have two huge scenes in the next two movies; one that would see her reunite with Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, and one that would see her confronting her son, Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. It’s not known at this stage whether either or both of those scenes are for Episode XIII – in which case, they’ll have already been shot – or for Episode IX.

The main options open to Trevorrow, Kennedy and Co. for Episode IX appear to be either rewriting the film, use a body double and CGI, or potentially even recast the role (which we sincerely hope they don’t do!).

Production on Star Wars: Episode IX is due to start early next year, so Disney, Lucasfilm, and Colin Trevorrow have a bit of time to choose the best way to move forward with all of this.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
