The STARGATE Remake is Dead

Remakes! Remakes as far as the eye can see! Well, it looks as if the long-mooted Stargate remake is one that won’t be happening any time soon…

Just such a remake has been in the works for several years now, with original director Roland Emmerich having been attached to the redo since 2013. Now though, according to Emmerich’s long time writing and producing partner, Dean Devlin, the Stargate remake is off the table.

Speaking to Empire, Devlin explained, “It looked good for a couple of months, but now it’s not looking so good. There are just a lot of things that have to fire at the same time, and there was a moment where I thought it was all firing at the same time, and then it all kind of fell apart.”

With the poor response to Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence seemingly playing a part in this whole situation, Devlin added, “It’s one of the reasons I prefer to work independently. Listen, I think if we did Stargate right, the fans would like it and we could do something really good. But if we screw it up, they’ll reject it. As they should. But I kind of don’t want to do it if I think that we’ll screw it up, and that’s one of the things that’s holding us back. You’d have to have several studios involved and a lot of voices and, you know, you may make something great, but you also may have something that doesn’t resemble what you want to do. That kind of ‘collaboration’ is a terrifying aspect of the whole thing.”

The last we’d heard on it, the plan was for Stargate to be rebooted as a new trilogy of films, with James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright having been brought in to work on the screenplay.

As a franchise, Stargate began life as a 1994 movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, which in turn was followed by three live-action TV shows, an animated TV show, and a couple of straight-to-DVD movies. For now, though, it looks as if any sort of reboot of the franchise won’t be happening any time soon.
