Ready for another big screen take on The Green Hornet? No? Well that’s a shame, for one’s on the way regardless.

Deadline is reporting that a new Green Hornet movie is indeed in development over at Paramount Pictures. In fact, Gavin O’Connor, who’s best known for Warrior and The Accountant, has already been brought in to direct this new take on an old favourite.

Speaking to the outlet, O’Connor enthused, “I’ve been wanting to make this movie – and create this franchise – since I’ve wanted to make movies. As a kid, when most of my friends were into Superman and Batman, there was only one superhero who held my interest – The Green Hornet. I always thought he was the baddest badass because he had no superpowers. And he didn’t wear a clown costume. And he was a criminal in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of the criminal world.”

He then added, “I want to re-mythologize The Green Hornet in a contemporary context, with an emphasis on story and character, while at the same time incorporating themes that speak to my heart. The comic book movie is the genre of our time. How do we look at it differently? How do we create a distinctive film experience that tells itself differently than other comic book movies? How do we land comfortably at the divide between art and industry? How do we go deeper, prompt more emotion? How do we put a beating heart into the character that was never done before? These are my concerns… these are my desires, my intentions, my fears, my goals.”

This new movie will be penned by Sean O’Keefe.

As for the Green Hornet character, he was created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker back in 1936. His first appearances were as part of a radio show, which was soon followed by film serials and comic books. Most famously, there was 1966’s The Green Hornet TV show starring Van Williams as Britt Reid/Green Hornet and Bruce Lee as Kato. Hornet would actually pretend to be a criminal in order to take down the bad guys with the help of Kato and their amped-up, tricked-out car, The Black Beauty. At that time, Green Hornet and Kato would actually even turn up in the classic Adam West and Burt Ward-starring Batman show. In more recent years, though, we were given 2011’s poorly-received movie take starring Seth Rogan, Jay Chou, Christoph Walz and Cameron Diaz.

Expect more on this new take on The Green Hornet as it develops.
