Captain Planet, he’s our hero. Gonna take pollution down to zero… You know the tune by now. Well, you do if you grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Either way, a Captain Planet movie is happening!

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions company will be working with Paramount Pictures to develop this live-action take on everyone’s favourite environmentalist. Scream Queens’ Glen Powell and Jono Matt will be penning the screenplay for the film.

For those not familiar with Captain Planet, he’s a character that began life back in 1990 as he headed up Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Transitioning to The New Adventures of Captain Planet, the good Captain and his Planeteer pals would get six seasons of protecting the planet in total. The animated adventures see Gaia, the very spirit of the Earth, in distress at the damage being done to the planet. Five teenagers are handed special rings that grant them certain powers. African Kwame has the power of earth, American Wheeler has the power of fire, Soviet Linka has the power of wind, Asian Gi has the power of water, and South American Ma-Ti has the power of heart. When these five bring their rings together, they summon the planet’s greatest hero, Captain Planet, as they look to battle nefarious sorts like the Eco-Villains and Captain Pollution.

Expect more on this as and when it develops.

His Ma-Ti is obviously in the right place. If only things were that simple!
