Update on New HALLOWEEN Movie

Remember that another entry in the Halloween franchise is currently in development? Yeah, we nearly forgot as well. Well now comes an update on just where things stand with this next movie.

Earlier this year was the huge news that Dimension Films/The Weinstein Company had lost the rights to the fan favourite Halloween franchise, with Blumhouse, Miramax, and Trancas International Films all coming together to partner on a new Halloween effort. Despite Oculus and Hush’s Mike Flanagan and You’re Next’s Adam Wingard initially being in the frame for the gig, neither director ended up signing on for the film, and all has been a little in limbo over the past few months.

The details on this new Halloween are all a little sketchy at the moment, but one big plus point for many horror hounds is the fact that the legendary John Carpenter will be back to serve as an executive producer. Additionally, talks are believed to be ongoing to have Carpenter provide the score for the film. On where things stand currently on the project, though, Blumhouse’s Jason Blum has been giving an update of sorts.

Speaking to Cinemablend, Blum explained, “We haven’t landed on an approach. We haven’t landed on a filmmaker, and we haven’t landed on an approach. We thought we had a filmmaker and an approach, and we don’t. We’re talking to a handful of people about it – all of them have different ideas. I don’t believe in coming up with an idea and telling the filmmaker what to do. So we have three to five different people we’re talking with, and all of them have a different idea about what it should be. And we haven’t landed on a group, and as a result we haven’t landed on an idea.”

What can you take from that? Well it sounds as if this next Halloween movie is still very much at a standstill.

Previously, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton had been brought on to pen the screenplay for what was known as Halloween Returns. That concept was ultimately dropped, and certain reports suggest that this next Halloween movie will actually be a reboot. We’ll have to see whether that means a straight-up redo of Carpenter’s iconic 1978 movie, a whole new take on The Night He Came Home, or if it just means a fresh start and fresh take with no particular history to have to be a slave to. It also suggests that Rob Zombie’s Halloween and Halloween II are going to be ignored where this new movie is concerned.
