Deathstroke to be the Villain of BATMAN Solo Movie

In what could be an inspired choice, it’s been revealed that Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, will be the main villain of the upcoming Ben Affleck-directed Batman solo movie.

This news has dripped out over the past few days (while we were a little tied up enjoying the fantastic STARBURST International Film Festival), with it all starting with Affleck himself posting a cryptic video of the fan-favourite rogue on his social media accounts. Given how Zack Snyder’s Justice League is currently shooting, the initial thought was that this meant that Deathstroke was to appear in Snyder’s superhero team-up movie. Apparently not, though, for The Wrap is reporting that the rogue will indeed be the ‘big bad’ of the currently-untitled Batman solo outing.

It’s not known who will be playing Deathstroke in the film at this stage, although the Affleck video is clearly of someone in a Deathstroke outfit somewhere on a set. Chances are the role is still uncast and that an announcement will follow over the next few months, and it could even be that we’ll see a cameo from the character when Justice League arrives next year. Either way, check out the rather cool footage below:

The appearance of Deathstroke in the DCEU is something that some thought may happen at some point, with Arrow’s Marc Guggenheim previously revealing that Manu Bennett’s Slade Wilson wouldn’t be appearing in the show again due to the character being “tied up in another DC project.” Basically, that meant that Slade was now a no-go for Arrow due to Warner Brothers having plans for him on the big screen, much like how Arrow killed off the likes of Deadshot and Amanda Waller when it was confirmed that they’d be heading to the big screen in Suicide Squad.

Of course, to many fans, Manu Bennet’s Slade Wilson/Deathstroke is arguably the finest live-action depiction of a comic book villain to date, with the grizzled Australian making Arrow’s version of Slade a truly iconic figure as his brothers-turned-enemies relationship with Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen was fleshed out masterfully over the show’s first two seasons.

As for the character of Slade Joseph Wilson himself, he was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez and debuted in 1980’s New Teen Titans #2. Slade, aka Deathstroke, made an instant impact as a master assassin and mercenary, and it wouldn’t take long before he’d become famous for battling the likes of Nightwing, Batman, and Green Arrow. In later years, Deathstroke would even be turned into more of an antihero at times. And just to give you an idea of just how badass he is, Slade Wilson is one of the few people to have defeated Batman in hand-to-hand combat. Multiple times, too! In fact, it’s even taken the combined might of the Justice League to defeat Deathstroke on certain occasions.

The upcoming Batman solo film is still yet to be given an official title – although The Batman is the rumoured working title at this time – but it will see Ben Affleck starring and directing. Affleck has also written the film’s screenplay with DC’s legendary Geoff Johns. No confirmed release date has been given to the film at this stage, although Warner Brothers have October 5th, 2018 and November 1st, 2019 dates reserved for two unnamed DC projects. As for Justice League, that will hit cinemas in November of next year.
