Doug Liman to Direct JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Movie

After years of on-again/off-again, it looks as if Warner Brothers is again moving forward with a Justice League Dark movie. Not only that, but the film has also landed a director.

Variety is reporting that Doug Liman will be helming the JL Dark movie, which is set to be titled Dark Universe. Liman is best known for the Tom Cruise-starring Edge of Tomorrow, and he is also the man recently tasked with directing the Channing Tatum-headlined Gambit movie for 20th Century Fox. On that front, it’s now said that Liman has officially left Gambit, adding further to the problems that film has had over the past year or so.

Previously, Guillermo del Toro was on board to write and direct Justice League Dark, although he sadly had to depart the project due to his ever-busy schedule and the brick walls that the film was regularly running in to. At that point in time, it was believed that Ron Perlman was up for the role of Swamp Thing, and that Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor were being eyed for John Constantine. Del Toro’s Justice League Dark was never given an official release date or even really 100% confirmed to be happening by Warner Brothers.

In the aftermath of del Toro having to leave the project behind, there was the reveal that an animated Justice League Dark movie was being developed. As such, many presumed that a live-action JL Dark adventure was off the table for the foreseeable future. Clearly not…

The actual Justice League Dark team didn’t debut until 2011 as part of DC’s ill-fated New 52 relaunch. Made up of the likes of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Madame Xanadu, and Zatanna, the group were on hand to tackle the dark, magical threats that only they could stop.

Warners currently have release dates in place for two untitled DC movies – October 5th, 2018 and November 1st, 2019 – so it could well be that Dark Universe will end up nabbing one of those slots.

As ever, expect more on all of this as it develops.
