Karl Urban Still Wants a DREDD Return

It’s the story that just won’t go away, but Karl Urban has one more talked up his hopes of getting a sequel to 2012’s Dredd.

Speaking to ComicBook.com at the Star Trek Beyond premiere, Urban again talked of his wish to return as Judge Joseph Dredd. “Yeah, I’ve gone on record saying that I would. Absolutely,” enthused Urban on his hope of a Dredd follow-up, even if that’s in the shape of a series rather than a film. “I mean, what’s clear to me is that there is an audience demand to see more and, if we can find a way to have a legitimate and worthy successor to Dredd, I’d love to be a part of it. You know, it would have to be something where we were focused on Dredd and coming to sort of understand the deeper inner workings of the character, otherwise there wouldn’t be much point doing it because it’s a huge challenge to play a character whose eyes you can’t see. We’ll see. I’m sure it will get made at some point. Whether it’s with me or not, I don’t know.”

Despite being poorly received at the box office upon its release, seemingly tarnished by memories of Sly Stallone's ill-fated take on the character back in 1995, Dredd soon became a big favourite of many when it was released on Blu-ray and DVD. It was a case of all who saw the film, seemingly loved the film… yet sadly not that many saw it during its cinema run, with Dredd only taking home a paltry $41.5 million at the global box office. As a result, any plans of a sequel were canned, although mightily impressive home release numbers – the film sold 750,000 DVD copies in its first week of release in North America alone – have seen a big demand for a sequel from many quarters.

At this stage, there’s sadly no plans for a sequel movie to arrive any time soon, but there have been some reports that suggest a follow-up could be in the form of a series for an on-demand streaming service such as Netflix or Amazon Prime.

As ever, expect more on this as and when it develops... and we really, really do hope that something develops on this front.
