The upcoming adaptation of SEGA’s Rent a Hero has found itself a director.

Steve Pink, best known for helming Hob Tub Time Machine as well as penning High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank, has boarded the film to write and direct. Jeff Morris, who wrote The True Memoirs of an International Assassin, will co-write the film with Pink.

The first Rent a Hero game came out on the SEGA Mega Drive in 1991 before a redo followed on SEGA Dreamcast in 2000. Plot-wise, the game tells the tale of a reluctant brainbox who ends up getting convinced to work on a project aimed to improve the everyday lives of regular people. Of course, the technology and discoveries that are being made are really being developed for a no-good company who wants to create new weapons. The central character and his cohorts join together to try and stop the world going to the dogs.

This is just one of the SEGA properties that’s being adapted by Stories International, with other adaps to centre on the likes of Golden Axe, Shinobi, Altered Beast, Streets of Rage and The House of the Dead.

On this news, Steve Pink said, “As SEGA fans, we are excited to dive into the near future with these Rent a Heroes, and explore what it means to be an everyday hero in a comedic, high-energy, action adventure.”

Stories International’s Tomoya Suzuki added, “Rent a Hero is a high-concept video game, yet has a very important theme we believe audiences today can connect with – we can help our society at our own capacities. We found the perfect creative team in Steve and Jeff to bring this unique action adventure based on one of our favourite SEGA titles to life as a feature film.”

As ever, expect more on this adaptation as it develops.
