Many have been looking forward to seeing what Adam Wingard can do with Death Note, and now comes word that the project has finally started moving forward in a major way.

Principal photography has commenced on this latest adaptation of the fan-favourite manga, with Wingard enthusing, “I am honored to be working with this great cast and I look forward to bringing Tusgumi and Takeshi’s unique story to a global audience.”

As alluded to there, Tusgumi Ohba and Takeshi Obati are the brains behind the original Death Note. This latest adaptation is set to arrive on Netflix next year, with the film to star Nat Wolff as Light Turner, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield as L, Paul Nakauchi as Watari, and Shea Wigham as James Turner. Roy Lee, Dan Lin Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka will be producing, with a statement from Lee and Din saying, “Our vision for Death Note has always been to bring this captivating story to the screen for its longtime manga fans and to introduce the world to this dark and mysterious masterpiece. The talent and diversity represented in our cast, writing, and producing teams reflect our belief in staying true to the story’s concept of moral relevance – a universal theme that knows no racial boundaries.”

In case you’re not familiar with Death Note, the official blurb on it reads:

Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.

Adam Wingard’s Death Note will arrive on Netflix in 2017.
