Update on Sony's Animated SPIDER-MAN and GHOSTBUSTERS Movies

Movie News

Remember how Sony is developing an animated Spider-Man movie? Remember how that news was also followed up by confirmation that the studio is working on an animated Ghostbusters effort as well? Well now comes an update on both of those projects.

Sony Pictures Animated has revealed details of their 2017/2018 slate, which has in turn given us some more information on the two aforementioned animated efforts.

Firstly, the Spidey movie – which is still currently just known as Spider-Man – is still pencilled in for a December 21st, 2018 release. That film will be completely separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Tom Holland’s Wallcrawler, whilst it will also have no ties to Sony’s previous Spidey incarnations, i.e. the Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man trilogy or the Andrew Garfield-starring Amazing Spider-Man series. This will be a completely fresh continuity that will allow the film to tell its own tale. Phil Lord is currently writing the movie, with Lord also producing alongside Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Christopher Miller and Craig Sost. Bob Persichetti, who has worked on Puss in Boots and The Little Prince, will be on directing duties.

Moving over to the Ghostbusters movie, and that will be titled Ghostbusters: Ecto Force and will actually tie in with the already-established cinematic realm of the Ghostbusters team. The film will be set in 2050 and focus on a new batch of Ghostbusters who are dealing with ghoulish threats on a global level. The aim of this film is to put a younger slant on the property and bring in some younger audience eyes. Ivan Reitman and his Ghost Corps production company are overseeing Ghosbusters: Ecto Force ahead of an early 2018 release.

As ever, expect more on both Spider-Man and Ghostbusters: Ecto Force as they develop.
