SICARIO Sequel Lands a Director; Del Toro & Brolin Returning

Movie News

Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario was one of the very finest movies of last year, and a sequel was announced way before the film even hit cinemas. With Villeneuve not returning - he’s a tad busy with the sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic Blade Runner – it’s now been revealed that Stefano Sollima will be the person tasked with helming the Sicario follow-up, Soldado.

Deadline is reporting the news, with the Gomorra and A.C.A.B. director to take charge of a sequel that will see the returns of Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin. The current plan is to start shooting Soldado this Autumn with a release date likely for some point in 2017.

Sicario centred on Emily Blunt’s FBI Agent as she looked at the drug wars going on by the US and Mexico border. Whilst Blunt isn’t expected to return for Soldado, Del Toro will be back as Alejandro Gillick and Brolin will return as CIA Agent Matt Graver. In Sicario, both Gillick and Graver were hot on the trail of the drug cartels and kingpins that were at play. For the sequel, it’s believed that the plot will revolve on terrorists being smuggled into the US.

Soldado’s screenplay is being penned by Taylor Sheridan, who also wrote the screenplay for Sicario.

Expect more on this as it develops.
