Mark Millar is no stranger to having his work adapted for the big screen, and now two more of his Millarworld properties have had their movie rights snaffled up.

Waypoint Entertainment has announced that they’ve acquired the rights to Millar’s American Jesus and Supercrooks. Waypoint’s Ken Kao will produce both movies along with Dan Kao and Addictive Pictures’ Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder.

On this news, Millar himself said, “I only come to LA one week a year and do all my meetings in the pub during those seven days every September. On my most recent trip, I met these guys and was wowed by their plans and the scale they’re working on. Leinil [Yu] and I couldn’t be more delighted to have Supercrooks up and running with such talented peopled. Peter Gross and I have held American Jesus back for a decade until the right team came along. This really is that team! The level of talent we’re talking about behind the camera has us all ridiculously excited. Fans of the books are in for an absolute treat.”

Supercrooks was written by Millar with art by Lenil Yu, and the story centres on eight supervillains who end up coming out of retirement to rob a nefarious crime boss. As for American Jesus, written by Millar and with art from Peter Gross, the tale focusses on a 12-year-old who’s the second coming of Jesus Christ and is tasked with saving the human race.

To date, Millar has seen work such as Wanted, Kick-Ass and The Secret Service (turned into Kingsman: The Secret Service) adapted for the big screen, with adaptations in the pipeline for Millarworld’s Superior, Chrononauts, Empress, MPH, Starlight and Huck. In addition to all of this, Millar’s comic book Civil War and The Ultimates have served as huge inspirations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there’s still plenty of speculation that his fan-favourite Old Man Logan arc will be the loose basis for James Mangold’s upcoming Wolverine 3.
