Todd McFarlane is a legendary figure in the comic book world, and one of his proudest creations is Spawn. After rumblings over the last year or so, the writer/artist has now revealed that he’s actually finished a script for a new Spawn movie.

Speaking to ComicBook at New York’s Toy Fair, he said, “I’ve finished the script, and I’m in the process of editing. It’s 183 pages, and producers usually like 120. I still think it’s going to end up being about 140 pages, because I’m putting in details for myself… I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they’ll let me direct it! I need to get him back up on the big screen again to make him relevant in a big way, which we will do. I’m curious to see what happens when we go, ‘Spawn’s back and there’s only one’, to see if we can get a little stampede, get people interested.”

Spawn is a character that McFarlane created back in 1992, with the badass antihero soon becoming a cult favourite. With a tragic backstory and a plethora of powers, Spawn’s popularity grew to the point where a Michael Jai White-starring movie hit the big screen in 1997. There has been talk of a sequel happening since way back in 1998, and that’s an idea that has reared its head at plenty of times over the years, with the sequel talk also switching over to reboot talk. In fact, it was only a few years ago that Jamie Foxx was actively championing himself to play Spawn in any future movie.

Given how Todd McFarlane now finally has a completed script for a new Spawn, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out and whether anything actually comes of it this time.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
