Looks like Disney's long-in-development 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA re-imagining is getting closer to reality, with the announcement that acclaimed screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker is hopping aboard the Nautilus with his old bud David Fincher. The pair previously collaborated on the serial killer classic SE7EN back in '95, but since this is Disney we don't expect Nemo to be coming across any heads in boxes or emaciated child molesters on this project.

Anyone unsure about Fincher being in charge of this vehicle might take solice in the fact that it was once in the hands of McG, so we all dodged a bullet there. It's not currently known when this film will begin shooting, as Fincher is still mulling a potential GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO sequel and that Cleopatra biopic. Obviously we're rooting for LEAGUES to become his priority, as his unique visual aesthetic and boundary-pushing directorial skills would clearly lend themselves well to this world. It could be very special indeed.

This news will no doubt trouble the makers of THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN NEMO (an independent UK produced take on Jules Verne's tale that you can read about here) who were probably hoping this project remained submerged.
