Christopher Nolan's MEMENTO to be Remade

Movie News

You know Christopher Nolan’s Memento, yeah? The really, really good film that came out in 2000 and went on to become a classic of its time? Pretty perfect film, right? We certainly think so. Clearly others don’t though, for a Memento remake is on the way. Don’t worry, we have no idea why either…

The rights for Memento were picked up when Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s AMBI Pictures purchased the Exclusive Media Group’s film library last week, which includes 400 films such as Cruel Intentions, Donnie Darko, End of Watch, Rush, Sliding Doors, Ides of March, and Parkland. It’s only now that plans have been revealed to redo Nolan’s Memento, which was an all-over-the-place (in a good way) movie that followed Guy Pearce’s Leonard suffering from memory loss as he tries to string together who raped and murdered his wife. The film itself was adapted from Jonathan Nolan’s Memento Mori short story.

As part of a statement on this, Iervolino said, “Memento has been consistently ranked as one of the best films of its decade. People who’ve seen Memento 10 times still feel they need to see it one more time. This is a quality we feel really supports and justifies a remake. The bar is set high thanks to the brilliance of Christopher Nolan, but we wouldn’t want it any other way. Our acquisition of the EMG library reinforced our commitment to build a strong global studio with a strong pipeline of commercial films that can play to a worldwide audience. Bringing a new Memento to audiences is an initial example of who we intend to execute this strategy.”

Monika Bacardi added, “Memento is a masterpiece that leaves audiences guessing not just throughout the film, but long after as well, which is a testament to its daring approach. We intend to stay true to Christopher Nolan’s vision and deliver a memorable movie that is every bit as edgy, iconic and award-worthy as the original. It’s a big responsibility to deliver something that lives up to the mystery of the original, but we are extremely excited and motivated to bring this puzzle back to life and back into the minds of moviegoers.”

So, is this yet another pointless remake or do you feel that there’s a need to remake Christopher Nolan’s classic?

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
