With Mad Max: Fury Road now available on Blu-ray and DVD, attention has again turned to possible sequels, with director George Miller revealing that plans are in place for two further movies.

Speaking to Top Gear, Miller confirmed, “This film [Fury Road] was green lit three times and fell over three times over a decade. We went to shoot with Mel Gibson back in 2001, but then 9/11 happened, and the American dollar collapsed against the Australian dollar close to 30%, so we lost that amount of budget overnight. We were then rained out of Australia. The desert rained for the first time in 15 years, and we ended up in South West Africa, Namibia. But in this process, we had dug down into the backstory, not only of the characters, but of every vehicle. How the steering wheels became religious artefacts and things like that. So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying. We’re talking to the studio about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next I’m not so sure.”

Despite largely wowing audiences and critics, Mad Max: Fury Road took a slightly disappointing $370 million globally earlier this year.

There’s been plenty of talk previously of further Max Rockatansky outings or even some films focussing on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa. Regardless of what does or doesn’t come to be, Miller has at least now confirmed that there are plans in place for two movies if Warner Brothers so chooses to move forwarded with them. The director has already revealed that the next movie will be called Mad Max: The Wasteland, but it looks as if he's also got plans for an additional film as well.

As ever, expect more on any Mad Max sequels as and when they develop.
