Movie News: New Clown based Horror on the Way in STITCHES

Movie News

Considering how inherently creepy clowns are it’s a wonder there are not more films featuring them in violent scenarios. Sure there was CLOWNHOUSE back in 1989 but that film didn’t go far enough and has been overshadowed by its sordid behind the scenes shenanigans involving director Victor Salva. That could all change soon with a film called STITCHES.

STITCHES is a horror comedy that will be produced by MPI Media Group (THE INNKEEPERS, STAKE LAND), Fantastic Films and The Irish Film Board and will be directed by Conor McMahon (DEAD MEAT). Filming begins this month with comedian Ross Noble starring along with Tommy Knight from DOCTOR WHO and THE SARA JANE ADVENTURES.

The film tells the story of Richard ‘Stitches’ Grindle, a jaded children’s clown who has a dark sense of humour that kids just don’t get. One day he runs afoul of some really nasty kids and ends up mutilated. Years later the kids, who are now teens, throw a party and Stitches shows up for some revenge.

The script is apparently a ‘unique, cinematic vision’ and a ‘fresh and twisted take on the genre’. Certainly sounds promising and it is from the producers of some great recent horror films - most notably THE LAST CIRCUS (review on the way), which heavily involves clowns and was utterly inspired, so it will be interesting to see how this one measures up.
