The upcoming return to Haddonfield, now known as Halloween Returns, has seemingly found itself a female lead.

Director Marcus Dunstan has talked up how he wants Bad Milo’s Gillian Jacobs as his lead, and from what he’s said it sounds like the actress could even be on board already. Speaking to Halloween Daily News, Dunstan said, “I really like this actress Gillian Jacobs. She’s known for all this comedy on Community, and yet I didn’t know her from Community first, I knew her from a movie called Gardens of the Night, which is one of the most wrenching dramas, and she’s excellent. I thought, ‘I wonder if this great performer would do that again, would like to go there,’ and I think so.”

On the meaning behind the Halloween Returns title, the director added, “It does function as what it means to say: if you commit a violent act, sometimes you get returns. What are the repercussions of being a violent entity? In that case, Halloween Returns could mean a number of things.”

Giving an idea on his vision for the film, Dunstan teased, “The coolest thing we’ve done so far is a couple motion tests of potential Michaels. I want to see a film shot on film. I want it to be one that stands on its own. Suspense isn’t expensive. A karate fight in a burning room is expensive. Michael Myers is subtlety and suspense.”

From what we’ve been told so far, the plot of Halloween Returns will tie in to the first two Halloween movies, essentially following 1981’s Halloween II and ignoring any and all movies that came since then. The story will continue with Deputy Gary Hunt, the cop originally played by Hunter von Leer and who accompanied Donald Pleasance’s Dr. Sam Loomis to the school in Halloween II. Hunt will now be the sheriff of Haddonfield as The Shape returns to commence his killing spree once again.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
