Rumoured Contenders and Characters for New SPIDER-MAN Movie

Movie News

With Tom Holland now in place as the Wallcrawler himself, things are starting to come together on just what we’ll be seeing in the new and rebooted Spider-Man movies.

Spidey will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut with a small role in next year’s Captain America: Civil War before being spun-off to his own solo film in 2017.  All we’ve heard on the solo movie front is that this new film is likely to be the first of a planned new trilogy, tentatively dubbed Spectacular Spider-Man, that Marisa Tomei is Aunt May, and that Jon Watts will be directing.

In some interesting news, the ever-reliable guys over at Latino Review claim to have some inside scoop on which other actors and characters are being lined up to populate Spider-Man’s world.

Now this is far from any sort of official confirmation, but the outlet has posted the below image with details of who’s being lined up for what:

The two villains on the list, Vulture and Scorpion, are rogues who have been under consideration for roles in previous Spider-Man efforts, with Ben Kingsley and John Malkovich notably being previously up for the Adrian Toomes/Vulture gig. If Billy Zane is indeed the one lined up to play Vulture then it certainly steers away from the traditional, older version of Toomes. As for American Pie’s Jason Biggs as Mac Gargan, that’s certainly an interesting one.

It’s also worth noting that the above does seem to play along with the speculation that Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark was going to be showing up to have a little tangle with Webhead. It’s additionally interesting to see that Timothee Chalamet, himself supposedly up for the Peter Parker gig at one time, is in talks to play Harry Osborn.

And yes, Hugh Laurie as J. Jonah Jameson and Forest Whittaker as Robbie Robertson sounds like an absolutely fantastic double act. Then there’s the apparent inclusion of Ned Leeds, a character who goes on to become the Hobgoblin, plus it’s nice to see that Liz Allen is somebody who may be getting some screen time in the future.

Rachel G. Fox as Mary Jane is a little bit of a left-field choice if this does indeed prove true, and The Maze Runner’s Jacob Latimore could do a great job as Flash Thompson, although let’s just hope that this version of Flash gets something to do other than just be the complete knucklehead bully we’ve seen previously. As for School of Rock’s Miranda Cosgrove as Betty Brant, that just makes us feel extremely old.

Like we touched upon at the top of the post, this is all unconfirmed at this stage and merely some news based on what Latino Review has heard from their sources. That said, LR is usually bang on the money with their scoops. Even if some of the above casting doesn’t come off, it’s at least likely to be a strong indication of what to expect from the new adventures of Spider-Man.

As ever, expect to hear plenty more on all of this as it develops.

Spidey will make his MCU debut in May 6th, 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, before the first of his new solo movies hits on July 28th, 2017.
