TERMINATOR Franchise in Trouble Once More?

It seems that no matter what the Terminator franchise tries, it can't escape its own proverbial Judgement Day.

With Terminator: Genisys having massively underwhelmed at the box office, it looks as if the franchise has an uncertain future once more. “I’ll be back?” Maybe, but maybe not.

Given the high hopes surrounding Genisys, not to mention the $155 million it cost to make, Paramount Pictures is believed to be massively disappointed with the $27 million opening weekend and the fact that the film has still only taken around the $280 million mark. The studio were looking at the film to take at least $300 million in order to not be classed as a total failure, let alone a success. In fairness though, Terminator: Genisys is yet to open in China, which is a market that should do good business for the movie.

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Paramount to get their thoughts on the numbers surrounding the film, with their response being, “We will definitely need to see the hold globally to confirm that people like the film.”

Given the fact that Genisys is the start of a new trilogy, there are some major concerns at how to approach the following two movies, with serious work needed on the story and Paramount possibly looking at reducing the budget of the films going forward, which is another spanner in the works. In a world where genre films can now pass the billion dollar mark, a projected return of $400 million on Terminator: Genisys is simply not good enough. Even more disappointing is that the franchise is losing fans. Sure, some people were impressed with Genisys (and it’s certainly nowhere near as bad as Terminator: Salvation), but the last two movies have made people realise that the much-slated Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines wasn’t all that bad after all.

The next Terminator movies are set for 2017 and 2018 at this stage, although expect more on those as things develop.
