Recent reports brought word that Selma director Ava DuVernay was being lined up to direct Marvel Studio’s Black Panther. Well, the director herself has now confirmed that, whilst there were discussions over her helming the T’Challa solo film, she decided against it.

When speaking to Essence about the possibility of helming the Chadwick Boseman-starring Black Panther, DuVernay revealed, “I guess I’ll declare my independence from this rumour on 4th July weekend and Essence weekend. I’m not signing on to direct Black Panther. I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do.”

The director then added, “I loved that they reached out to me. I loved meeting Chadwick and the writers and all the Marvel execs. In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realise that now than cite creative differences later. I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be the first in line to see it.”

Marvel’s Kevin Feige recently confirmed that there’s been meetings with several directors when it comes to Black Panther, so it’ll be interesting to see who ends up with the gig. Either way, it seems like it definitely won’t be Ava DuVernay.

The character of Black Panther will debut in next May’s Captain America: Civil War before then going on to headline his own July 2018 solo film.
